I agree on the coupe, the windshield is way too tall and vertical.

The convertible is gorgeous and anyone who says otherwise hasn’t been blessed with the gift of sight.

I can’t believe that anyone walked into the design studio, took one look at that, and said “looks great!” Especially as the re placement for the Gran Torino. stacked rectangular headlamps don’t look good on any car, but this was the worst.

It’s pretty clear this heap was the inspiration for the Family Truckster:

I have never really liked E-Type coupe version’s side windows. But the “Low Drag” version fixes this. There’s several versions of these too.

The convertible fixes some of the awkwardness by just chopping it off, but, the front end is still sooooooooo much longer than it needs to be.

Lore has it that AMC’s then-CEO Roy Aberne thy insisted he be able to sit in the back seat with his hat on, and he was rather tall. so the roofline had to be altered to accommodate, throwing the proportions off.

Come to think of it, “Roy Abernethy” sounds exactly like the name of a 1950s-60s businessman.

the sad thing is that the Torino it replaced wasn’t a bad looking car for the era, even with the 5 mph front bumpe r.

and while it’s not “ugly” per se, 1977 is also when the Cougar went off the rails. It turned into a rather generic “faux glitzy” car like so many other cars of the era (Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, etc.)
